This research led, in the specific field of hair stem cells, to the discovery — supported and validated by patient testing — of the HST technique, also known as PL-FUT. Unlike other commonly practiced techniques, only portions of follicular units are removed from the donor area.
For this procedure, extremely fine needles with a diameter of 0.5 to 0.6 mm are used.

HST: An Innovative Patented Hair Stem Cell Transplant Technique

Dr. Gho patented this HST hair restoration technique which, in addition to the partial removal of follicular unit portions from the donor area using micro-punches, involves immersing the grafts in a solution containing bis-maltolato oxovanadium, whose action inhibits apoptosis (cell death). This differs from other techniques that use Ringer’s lactate, which is simply a saline solution. It is therefore not necessary to transplant an entire follicular unit to regenerate hair, but only part of the follicular stem cells.
Gho studied various stem cells and their potential applications, as well as the localization of follicular stem cells in entire follicular units and grafts, and the growth potential of partial follicular units containing hair stem cells.
Dr. Gho’s research demonstrated that a certain quantity of hair stem cells remains attached to the graft and can be used for stem cell culture.
The portion of the follicular unit used for HST transplants is extremely small.

Hair Stem Cells Attached to the Graft Generate a New Follicular Unit

When a significant portion of hair stem cells remains attached to the graft, the graft produces normal hair growth.
The explanation for this phenomenon lies in the fact that the structure of the follicular unit remaining in the donor area is necessary for hair growth.
However, when cells derived from grafts are cultured, they can develop into epidermis suitable for skin grafting.
This phenomenon therefore demonstrated that the grafts themselves contain hair-type stem cells.
